Raymond Franz, RIP

Raymond Franz
Raymond Victor Franz, 1922-2010

It was announced this morning (June 2nd) that Raymond Franz passed away due to a stroke injuries he suffered on May 30, 2010.

Mr. Franz was a much-loved and respected Christian all of his life. As active and dedicated Jehovah’s Witnesses, he and his wife served for over 40 years in various assignments, primarily in the Caribbean and at Watchtower headquarters in Brooklyn, NY. He was a former missionary and member of the Watchtower Society’s Governing Body. Since the early 1980s, after leaders of the Watchtower Society excommunicated him, he lived privately and quietly in the southeastern United States.

Franz spent much of his time writing about his experiences as a Jehovah’s Witness, publishing Crisis of Conscience and In Search of Christian Freedom. These two books are among the most widely read personal essays on the history and teachings of the Watchtower Society.

According to sources close to his wife, Cynthia, Ray requested that there be no funeral or memorials. We will publish further announcements and links to other sites as more information becomes available to us.

  1. My name is Daniel Chamberlayne and I’m the author of the 2008 published book, “The Kingdom Hall No More”.

I had spoken to Mr. Franz and his lovely wife Cynthia last year and my first thought was…..I will be speaking to Mr Raymond Franz and suddenly, I got nervous !!!I

When Mr. Franz got on the phone, I stuttered several times and nervously said, “hello…is this Mr. Franz?” …

He stated that he was indeed Raymond Franz and I felt like I was speaking to someone internationally famous.

I told him I had just written a book and thanked him for the guts and inspiration on writing a honest book about his years as one of the top men that was part of the society.

He encouraged me to continue doing on what my conscience had called me out to do and continue seeking truth !

Thank you Mr Raymond Franz…..you will be missed !

  2. 12 Hence straighten up the hands that hang down and the enfeebled knees, 13 and keep making straight paths for YOUR feet, that what is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather that it may be healed. 14 Pursue peace with all people, and the sanctification without which no man will see the Lord, 15 carefully watching that no one may be deprived of the undeserved kindness of God; that no poisonous root may spring up and cause trouble and that many may not be defiled by it; 16 that there may be no fornicator nor anyone not appreciating sacred things, like E´sau, who in exchange for one meal gave away his rights as firstborn. 17 For YOU know that afterward also when he wanted to inherit the blessing he was rejected, for, although he earnestly sought a change of mind with tears, he found no place for it.

  3. as a former JW i was interested in Raymond Franz book Crisis of Conscience and purchased it even though had been no part of the JWs for years guilt was the over riding feeling as i read the book! after reading the book i was more at ease due to the fact that Raymond was truthful and even on the things i was sceptical i have found to be true, it is 12 november 2010 and i have only just discovered Raymond Franz has Died, i am sad of this news, but he made me realise that you cannot give your obedience 100% without question to men, for they are only men, and as the bible says, do not put your trust in earthling man to whom no salvation belongs!

  4. Today is 29th November 2010, I found out today that Mr. Franz died and I feel like I have lost a friend even though I have never spoken to this man in my life. As an ex Witness his book Crisis of Conscience has touched me on so many levels that I would have to write a book myself to explain it. I am convinced that he he had a higher calling in life, that he was a scribe and a man of extraordinary insight and perception. Rest well brother Franz, your words live on and give you voice.

  5. @Joanne Modeste – Your words brought me to tears. I felt very much the same. I wish I had known him personally and had been able to ask him questions directly. Not to mention have a weekly study with him. I sometimes wish he had a church of his own. But then again, I understand why he didn’t.

  6. I have been hanging around the Kingdom Hall meetings for some years, but nerver a jehovah’s witness. I’m very sceptical that this Christian Organization have arranged themselves that they worship God directly, as in Abraham’s days; a friend of God. What are their thinking.
